Phone Clover runs on your own Telnyx account. Your phone numbers stay in that account, Telnyx bills you directly for numbers, minutes and texts, and Phone Clover charges only for the software. This guide connects the two. It takes about five minutes.
Before you start
- Who can do this: an admin of the HighLevel sub-account.
- A Telnyx account. If you don’t have one, sign up at telnyx.com and add a payment method. Some features, such as texting from a number you already own (Hosted SMS), need a verified Telnyx account. Telnyx explains its verification levels in its own portal.
- Phone Clover installed in the sub-account. See Install Phone Clover in HighLevel.
Step 1: Create an API key in Telnyx
- Sign in to the Telnyx portal at portal.telnyx.com.
- Open Keys & Credentials, then API Keys.
- Click Create API Key.
- Copy the key straight away. Telnyx shows it only once. If you lose it, create a new one.
Warning: the API key gives full access to your Telnyx account. Paste it only into the Phone Clover settings card. Never send it by email or chat. If it leaks, delete it in the Telnyx portal and create a new one.
We recommend a separate key just for Phone Clover, so you can turn it off without affecting anything else. Don’t set an expiry date on it: when a key expires, Phone Clover stops working until you connect a new one.
Step 2: Copy your public key
In the same portal area, Keys & Credentials, open Public Key and copy it. It is a short line of letters and numbers. The public key is not a secret: Phone Clover uses it to check that call and text events really come from your Telnyx account.
Step 3: Connect in Phone Clover
- In HighLevel, open Phone Clover and click the Settings gear.
- On the Overview tab, find the Telnyx account card.
- Paste the API key into API key and the public key into Public key.
- Click Connect Telnyx.
Phone Clover checks the key with Telnyx before it saves anything. Then it sets up two things inside your Telnyx account, both named Phone Clover followed by your location ID:
| Created in your Telnyx account | What it is for |
|---|---|
| A messaging profile | Sends your texts and delivers replies and delivery updates to Phone Clover |
| An outbound voice profile | Lets the browser phone place calls from your numbers |
If you connect again later, Phone Clover reuses these instead of creating new ones.
When it works, the card shows Connected, the date, your Telnyx balance, and the last characters of the two profile IDs. Your API key is stored encrypted and is never shown again, not even to admins.
Step 4: Add your numbers
Open the Numbers tab. Numbers in your Telnyx account that aren’t in use in Phone Clover yet appear there, ready to add. You can also buy new numbers from the same tab.
Warning: adding a number in Phone Clover moves it onto the Phone Clover messaging profile and routes its incoming calls to Phone Clover, inside your Telnyx account. If that number is used by another system today, such as another app or a desk phone setup, texts and calls on it will stop going there. Add only numbers you want Phone Clover to handle.
If this sub-account used Phone Clover before on our shared account, numbers from that account don’t carry over. Phone Clover reminds you after you connect. Re-add your numbers on the Numbers tab.
Step 5: Register for business texting
US carriers require business texting registration (A2P 10DLC) on your own Telnyx account. Start it from the Texting tab. See Register for A2P 10DLC. Any registration you had on our shared account doesn’t move with you, because registrations belong to the Telnyx account they were made on.
Disconnect
On the Telnyx account card, click Disconnect and confirm. Numbers on your Telnyx account stop working in Phone Clover until you connect an account again. Nothing is deleted from your Telnyx account: the numbers, the two Phone Clover profiles, and your call and message history stay there.
Troubleshooting
“That API key was rejected by Telnyx.” The key is wrong, disabled or expired. Check it in the Telnyx portal under API Keys, or create a new one and paste it again.
“That does not look like a Telnyx public key.” You probably pasted the API key, or only part of the public key, into Public key. Copy it again from Keys & Credentials, Public Key.
“Could not reach Telnyx to check that key. Try again in a moment.” Telnyx didn’t answer in time. Wait a minute and click Connect Telnyx again. Nothing was saved.
“Telnyx accepted the key but setup failed. Try again in a moment.” The key is fine, but creating the messaging or voice profile didn’t finish. Try again: Phone Clover reuses anything it already created.
Texts send but replies never arrive. In the Telnyx portal, make sure the number is assigned to the Phone Clover messaging profile. Adding the number on the Phone Clover Numbers tab does this for you.
Calls don’t ring in the browser phone. Add the number on the Phone Clover Numbers tab so its incoming calls route to Phone Clover, then check the health badges on the Overview tab. See No incoming call popup.
